AN HISTORIC CANAL GARDEN

UP NATELY

This design was for proposed house on the site of the old Nately brickworks, latterly a piggery, near the Basingstoke canal.  The brief was to create a landscape sympathetic to the history of its rural setting and to provide privacy to its occupants from the road and a footpath running along the canal.

My design included a sunken terrace to provide a private entertaining space, hidden from the view of the footpath by new planting.  A rill running down the side of the house to a small pool on the terrace created movement and interest and visually connected the house to the adjacent canal.

Formal planting and hard landscaping were kept close to the house, with the wider garden planted with deciduous native trees and shrubs in amongst areas of short flowering grassland to provide a range of wildlife habitats.
